Qualifications & Experience
I bring over 15 years of experience working successfully with people from all walks of life who struggle with a diverse range of problems.
I have strong theoretical and clinical skills - I am trained to consider all the factors that may contribute to a problem (i.e. socio-economic status, age, gender, ethnicity, sexuality, religion and politics and the dominant discourses that are associated with these factors) along with techniques to unpack or deconstruct problematic discourses. |
I hold two Master’s degrees, one in Counselling and one in Applied Social Work. I believe these two degrees assist me in viewing people and their problems from both an internal and external world-view perspective.
I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, so have a good knowledge of mental health. I have undertaken 8 years of Primary Mental Health Counselling, counselling youth, individual and couples.
I hold a specific post graduate degree in Family Counselling - sometimes referred to as Family Therapy.
I am an accredited Level 4 Triple-P Parenting Educator so can provide parenting education and parenting interventions for parents with children who display mild to moderate behavioural issues.
I am of part Ngai Tahu descent so am empathetic and cognisant of issues pertaining to Tangata whenua and fully support and encourage the application of Te Tiriti o Waitangi in all aspects of Aotearoa life and work. I can offer to work using Te Whare Tapa Wha model if clients prefer this model.
I have undergone my own journey in personal growth and self- awareness to better understand how my gender, ethnicity, family culture and the society I grew up in has positioned my worldview.
This knowledge and awareness has equipped me to work with clients of all ethnicities, cultures, gender, sexuality and relationship preferences in a safe, non- judgemental and non- biased way.
